How to Record Desktop using VLC Media Player



VLC Media Player is a popular media player, which is available for multiple platforms including Windows, Android etc. VLC is popular because it does support various media files. From MP3 to MKV to AMR – you can play everything with VLC media player. The interesting thing is VLC media player can stream various live videos. For example, many people watch Apple events/conferences using VLC media player.
However, there is another great feature available in VLC. That is, you can record desktop using VLC media player. Although, there so many desktop recording software are available for making good video, but most of them are paid and free tools comes with limitations like watermark, time etc. But, if you use VLC media player to record video, you cannot find any limitations because this is completely free and allows users to record as long video as they want.
However, the setup may consume a quite long time but that is not more than 2 minutes. As this is a media player, you will have use it in a different way. Thus, it will take some time for setup. But, once you set it up, it will be according to your wish and changes.

Record Desktop using VLC Media Player

As this tutorial is based on VLC media player, make sure you have VLC in your PC. If you don’t have this media player, just download and install it. It supports any Windows versions you want. Do not install the metro version of VLC. This trick won’t work on that version. Just install the regular desktop version of VLC media player. Following that, do follow the subsequent steps.
At first, open VLC media player, click on Media and select Open Capture Device. You will get a screen like this,

Now, select Desktop as capture mode and frame rate (10FPS is enough). Make a tick on the check box that is placed prior to Show more options. Here you can set up Start Time etc. Don’t forget to check Play another media synchronously.

At last, click on the arrow button beside Play option and select Convert. The following screen will come out.

Here, you should create a dedicated profile for recording videos. To create a new profile, click on the corresponding button. Now, you will get a screen like this,

At first, enter a profile name. Then, select MP4/MOV in Encapsulation tab, H-264in Video codec tab, MP3 in Audio codec tab.
Now, go back to the previous window and click on Browse to set a destination file.

The last thing you will have to do is to click on Start button.
It will start the recording. After finishing, you can play your recording by clicking on the file that you created in the last step.
